Companions

The gods have ever so graciously bestowed the gift of companions upon us. Right now, we only have two types of companions, raccoons and wolves. They are similiar to a War Mage's familiar but have no magical ability to "speak" to someone else. We can communicate to them when they get old enough to deliver messages to people, or pick up and retrieve items via signals. Also at this time, we are only allowed one or the other of companions. In other words, you cannot have a Raccoon AND a Wolf, like a War Mage can have multiple familiars. Hopefully this will someday change and we will also get more choices of companions.

Update 5/03: DO NOT EVER take your companion with you when you go scouting on a trail...else you will lose it!

RACCOONS

Around the 13th and 17th circle, we Rangers become more attuned with the wild life of Elanthia and earn the trust and friendship of an animal companion. I won't give away the "secret" as to where you can find them, because it is much more fun to find out for yourself! I will say it is located south of Leth Deriel, but not on the Southern Trade Route. And make sure you have plenty of wild corn!

What Is Needed:

  • At least 13th Circle
  • 80 lessons total in tracking and perception (any combination as long as it adds to 80)
  • 50 lessons in hiding
  • 36 total between charisma, intelligence and wisdom

Care
I probably have been through more raccoons then any Ranger in the Realms, so far I'm up to number 10. My last one, actually made it to the senile stage. So here is my advice on the proper care of a baby raccoon. First and foremost, they require alot of attention and affection. Petting your baby tends to quiet it down when it starts pacing or becomes nervous. As for feeding, raccoons tend to start whimpering when they are hungry and they usually greedily eat it. I try to carry four ears of corn on me when my raccoon is with me. It also seems they want to eat every hour you are in game, real life time. They will eat corn their whole lives so you don't have to worry about feeding it meat. A baby grows to young raccoon after it has been with you for 24 hours (this means actually by your side with you in the game, not while you were logged off). The life stages of both Raccoons and Wolfs is as follows: Baby to Young, Young to Full-grown, Full-grown to Senile. When a companion reaches senile stage of life, it's best to return him/her to the wilds. To do so, go visit Kalika and RETURN COMPANION TO KALIKA. She will take it out to the wilds herself and release it. You can then either get another raccoon or wolf if you so choose.

If, under any circumstance, the raccoon feels it isnt receiving the correct attention or is going hungry, it will return to its natural habitat of the deep woods. Should you happen to lose your coon for some reason, don't panic...you CAN get another. If you are out hunting, your baby will get scared and hide in the shadows when it sees a critter. If you are swamped with critters, you may miss Junior's feeding time...and not even know he's gone until you look for him! Your best bet is to have the baby on the ground, leave the realms, go out and hunt; and then call him back after you finished hunting. One point to note is that when you leave the realms your raccoons are sometimes unaware that you have left causing their death from starvation or their returning to the wilds. One way to combat this is to hold the raccoon in your arms when you leave for good. Raccoons are creatures of the wild and not fond of city life; you CAN lose your raccoon just from being in a store or city too long. I had number five leave me while I was shopping in Knife Clan, even though he was petted and feed...I thought he just didn't like the merchandise <shrugs>.

On your return to the realms you just WHISTLE FOR RACCOON and he/she will come back to you. The only way to communicate with a companion is to use SIGNALSand, although while they are young they try hard to please, they are often unsuccessful in their attempts to carry out your wishes. Typing SIGNAL allows some brief in game advice on companion signals.

WOLVES

You can find the wolves near the Knife Clan, but as with the Raccoons, it's more fun if you find them yourself.
I will say you should keep an eye out for animal tracks in the mud.

Get out your milk and put it in your right hand.
Kneel
Wait - Before too long, a wolf pack should come along. If you are ready to get a wolf, one will seem to smile at you. If not, then one will sniff at you with disinterest. If one of them smiles at you, stand up, and APPROACH the pack and the mama will leave behind a baby for you!

Requirements:

Care:

If your baby paces, that means that it is nervous, so you need to pet it. If it whimpers, it means that it is hungry, so you need to feed it some milk. When wolves grow up and they become "young wolf", they no longer drink milk, so you either need to send them on a hunt, or carve them food from bears or hogs, cougars, snowbeasts, or, (on the islands), peccaries and la'tamis.  Young wolves are usually unsuccesful during their hunts, and that they rely solely on your ability to hunt for them. I'm not sure how long it takes for wolves to grow up, but am told a rough estimate is 50 hours (by your side) per each growth stage (i.e. baby to young; young to full-grown; full-grown to senile)

NOTES:

Be VERY careful when feeding your young or full-grown wolf meat. First carve the meat, smell it to make sure that it's fresh, then immediately feed it to your wolf. If you don't, your wolf may get poisoned from the meat! Also, when trying to befriend a wolf, if you have committed a crime, or your bonus isn't intact, you won't be able to get one.

COMPANION SIGNALS

As babies there is not much companions really do, but once they get older there are many things they can do. To find out all the things type SIGNAL. There are a few things you should know though:

Companion slates:
These are mini chalkboards that allow you to send small messages to folks. It is best to train folks a little before you use'em or your gonna lose your slate. When you send your companion to someone with a slate the syntax you use is: SIGNAL COMPANION TO FIND <Name> AND WAIT
This ensures that they can get the slate, read the message, clean the slate, and write a reply. Then they: GIVE SLATE TO <companion>
The slates are available for sale in the Lang Ranger Guild, assorted colors too for around 6 plat lirums.

If you just want to send a friend (or an empath or cleric that wouldn't accept a tip) a present just :
SIGNAL COMPANION TO FIND <Name>
